Engagement of all pupils

All children take part in a minimum of 2 hours of high-quality PE per week as part of their curriculum learning. The track is used daily on a rota basis, and the children are encouraged to be active during their break and lunch times. We have play-leaders for break time to encourage the younger children to be active and to try new activities.

For any inter-school festivals in which it may be possible to participate, children will be chosen by adult selection, not ability, in order to offer this opportunity to more children.

Profile of PE and Sport

We have a Sports Council with representatives from each class who are responsible for promoting sport across the school and for helping to organise inter-house events. They also worked together to compile our current playground games rota, and review it termly.

The staff are aware of the benefits of activity for physical and emotional well-being and to enhance engagement in all aspects of learning.

Our annual Sports Week takes place in the summer term and offers different opportunities for children.

Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff

We have continued to up-skill our teachers using external experts. It is our intention that a wide variety of sports activities will be facilitated during Sports Week, which will enable our staff to implement new ideas within their teaching.

The PE manager attended the Local Authority Sports Conference and has shared ideas with the staff.

Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

It is intended that Sports Week will enable children to take part in a range of activities, including ball skills, archery, tennis, circuit training and adventurous outdoor activities.

All the children received healthy lifestyle teaching as part of the PHSE programme.

Our playground includes the track, gym equipment (for children in Y2 to Y6), core strength and balance and adventure equipment which encourages physical activity across the school.

Year 5 children are offered training from Bikeability to encourage life-long, safe cycling.

Increased participation in competitive sport

Inter-House events are planned to take place in a range of sports. This is in addition to Sports Day which is a competitive event.

For any inter-school festivals in which it may be possible to participate, children will be chosen by adult selection not ability in order to offer this opportunity to more children.

Our football teams participate in the local school leagues.

Swimming

At our school, the children learn to swim in Y4. The programme is taught by experienced ASA qualified teachers and includes water safety, stroke work, personal survival, and shore-based rescue techniques.

What impact has there been on pupil participation and attainment leading to all pupils developing a healthy lifestyle?

As is already documented, all children in our school are actively encouraged to be active and to participate in a wide range of physical activities.

Our healthy snack policy and high-quality lunch provision – including guidance on lunch-boxes where needed – ensure children develop a healthy relationship with food. Consequently, a very low percentage of children have weight issues.

The National Child Measurement Programme statistics for 2023/4 show that the number of children classified as overweight or obese in our Y6 continues to be below both national and local averages. This is a reflection of the teaching and encouragement to participate in physical activity our school provides.
